Short answer: Depends. AirTag 2 is the best tracker if you're in Apple ecosystem, but AirTag 1 owners can safely skip.
When It IS Worth It
You're buying your first tracker. Setup is still one tap, Find My network is still unmatched, and precision finding is excellent.
You travel often. Luggage tracking remains the killer use-case. Airline counters suddenly become less stressful when your phone says your bag is still in Terminal B.
When It Is NOT Worth It
You already own 2-4 original AirTags. AirTag 2 improves range and speaker quality, but your daily experience is mostly the same.
You use Android. Don't do this. Get Tile or Chipolo.
Who Should NOT Buy This
- Android users
- Anyone expecting GPS-level live tracking
- People who think this is anti-theft hardware
Cheaper or Better Alternatives
| Alternative | Price | My Take |
|---|---|---|
| AirTag 1 (on sale) | $19-24 | Best value if discounted |
| Tile Pro | $35 | Better cross-platform support |
| Chipolo One Point | ~$28 | Works with Google's Find My Device |
What Annoys Me About AirTag 2
- Still no keyhole; accessories still required
- Battery still disposable coin cell
- Anti-stalking alerts remain inconsistent in edge cases
Final Verdict
AirTag 2 is the right buy for new buyers, not a must-upgrade for existing owners.
Rating: 7/10 — excellent ecosystem product, minor iteration.
